According to international news sites, last Friday, July 8, 2011, at 9:05 in the morning, a new record may have been set in Texas. Two parents were really proud as the biggest baby ever born reportedly in the place was delivered via Caesarean section. Janet Johnson gave birth to her fourth child, JaMichael Brown. JaMicheal weighs 16 pounds, 1-ounce and measures 2 feet long. His head measurement was 15 inches and his chest measured 17 inches. These figures are usual for babies that are 3-6 months old. JaMichael has the size that is double that of a healthy newborn baby.
A lot of hospital staff members at the Good Shepherd Medical Center (located in Longview, Eastern Texas) were in awe at the baby’s size. One of the hospital nurses, Mary Beth Smith, who was in the delivery room at the time of JaMichael’s birth said “It’s a beautiful baby, but for health reasons, we’d rather not see a baby this large”. What she meant is the fact that babies with this size are more likely to have a harder time regulating their blood sugar.
The mother had gestational diabetes during her pregnancy with JaMichael. This is why her doctors already informed her to expect the baby to be big. Their estimate was around 12-13 pounds. So she knew that the baby is going to be big, but the real weight was still higher than what was expected. Johnson was used to giving birth to large babies but her largest before JaMichael was only 8 pounds.
Because the baby was larger than expected, they have to exchange the clothes they purchased in preparation for the baby’s coming. Even the diapers at the hospital nursery were too small for him.
JaMichael was placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the hospital so doctors can regulate his blood sugar and assist him with his respiration and nutrition. It was reported that the baby is progressing well and his father (Michael Brown) was already informed that the baby should be home in a few days. The parents and other family members are all excited to take him home. They are all very proud of JaMichael.
Reportedly, Michael Brown said:
“We may finally have a star football player in the family, or maybe a basketball player. I was just amazed when he came out, how big he was. I’m just proud of him, (we are a) proud family.”
