Philippine Lawyer Sues 2 Restaurants for Senior Citizens’ Discounts; Are You Entitled to a Discount?

MANILA, Philippines – The Senior Citizens’ Discount is granted to Filipino citizens who are 60 years old or older. Persons with dual citizenship could avail of the discount as long as they could prove their Filipino citizenship and have resided in the Philippines for at least 6 months.

Reportedly, Romulo Macalintal has filed charges against 2 restaurants that have refused to consider their drivers’ licenses as proof of identification. The refusal of the establishment to honor the IDs apparently violated Republic Act 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010.

Senior citizens are given 20 % discounts and VAT exemptions (If possible) in hospitals, restaurants, public transports, medical services and medicines, lodging, dental services, and laboratory and diagnostic tests. The discounts are also applied with credit cards.
