The “Harlem Shake” dance video meme went viral on YouTube making the debut of “Harlem Shake” the song to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs, No. 1 on iTunes US this February. The dance meme sensation was performed by viewers all around the world adding to the millions of viewers who already watched the video.
“Harlem Shake” was originally created and sung by Harry Rodrigues, (DJ Baauer). He did not expect such tremendous reception from the Internet. The song became popular when a meme was created featuring different videos with people from all walks of life dancing to Baauer’s “Harlem Shake.”
The meme spread like wildfire with swimmers doing an underwater version, old people dancing to its tune, and millions of people doing their own version of the dance. The meme became viral almost equaling Korean Pop Star Psy’s Gangnam Style dance craze hits.
The “Harlem Shake” dance, though, has no specific steps. The dance memes had their own ingenuity with a common denominator: one person dancing, with the rest joining after a video jump.
On YouTube, the meme earned 40,000 “Harlem Shake” videos from different people all over the world, gaining more millions of views. Here is one such video, uploaded by the Shaytards.
