It’s the commemoration of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor this December 7, and recent images of a U.S. navy seaplane that sank during the bombing were released.
The University of Hawaii and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of Hawaii released images of the Catalina PBY-5, which is buried underneath the waters in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
It revealed a haven for marine life, and there are no solid plans of retrieving it yet.
The attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 was one of the worst maritime disasters in history with more than 2,000 dead and thousands more injured.
Senior archaeologist, June Cleghorn, of the Marine Corps Base in Hawaii stated:
“This sunken flying boat is a window into the events of the attack, a moment in time that reshaped the Pacific region. Understanding this site sheds light on the mystery of the lost PBYs and honors the legacy of the Navy and Marine Corps Base in Hawaii.”
