MANILA, Philippines – The government is not taking steps to stop the increase of the contributions of SSS and Philhealth members; likewise, with the increase of Meralco electric charges. Reportedly, President Noynoy Aquino, thru his spokesperson, Abigail Valte, stated that “the palace has no magic wand to wave” to stop the increase. On the SSS and Philhealth increased contributions, the palace also said it was rejecting the call to stop the increase of members’ contributions.

Amidst all the additional financial burdens for the ‘common tao’, Filipinos struggle to keep themselves afloat in spite of spiraling prices of basic commodities and services. The breadwinner of the family continues to work diligently to put three square meals a day on his family’s table.

If the government has no magic wand, then the Bayan Muna party-list is brave enough to come forward to raise questions on the SSS’ increase on members’ contributions.

The SSS should, instead, improve their services before increasing contributions; its services are slow, (almost a month for loan processing.) According to the Bayan Muna party-list, they have had huge bonuses too, so they should not lack funds.

Numerous SSS members disagree with the increase but what could they do? Not pay their contributions?

What do you think? Is the SSS entitled to increase its members’ contributions?
