A US government shutdown is looming as the stalemate between Democrats and Republicans over budget cuts continues. Federal workers are disheartened because they will bear the major brunt of the event. Meanwhile the global community “watches” as US politicians “haggle” about national financial issues. This was reported by International news sites, March 7 & 8, 2011.
has not arrived to any agreement, as the 30-hour deadline, until Friday Midnight, looms nearer.
The Democrats and Republicans should put their act together and do away with any political aspiration for the sake of the constituents whom they preside over. If a housewife can balance her budget by using Math, surely they could also settle the budget stalemate by looking at the figures and not on the political advantages they could obtain.
A federal government shutdown would not only lose the slowly recovering economy of the US but would harm its standing in the global economy as well. Already stocks vales are falling and about 800,000 non-essential federal workers are conducting meetings to prepare for the eventuality. The Washington area alone has more than 300,000 federal employees who would be affected by the federal shutdown.
Government companies, like NASA, and contractors are getting ready for a possible government shutdown. The Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) said it will not furlough any employee. This is apparently with the understanding that the shutdown will last for only 2 to 3 days. Understandably, a longer period would affect operations.
US soldiers’ military pay will also be partially on hold if the government shutdown proceeds. Likewise other non-essential federal workers would be furloughed and they may get paid or not when and if they report back to work because of this government shutdown this 2011 .
